Angelina Jolie has visited Colombian refugees who were forced to flee their country to seek peace across the border in Ecuador. According to the UNHCR, the actress is on a special envoy of High Commissioner for the Refugees.

“She is expected to focus on large-scale crises resulting in the mass displacement of people, to undertake advocacy and represent UNHCR and Mr Guterres at the diplomatic level, engaging with relevant interlocutors on global displacement issues,” UNHCR spokesman Adrian Edwards said.

This was the Oscar-winning actress’ first working visit to the country since Antonio Guterres named her special envoy. Jolie has visited over 40 countries around the world since becoming a UN goodwill ambassador in 2001.

Ecuador, which literally translates to The Republic of the Equator, is a representative democratic republic in South America, bordered by Colombia on the north, Peru on the east and south, and by the Pacific Ocean to the west. It is one of only two countries in South America, along with Chile, that do not have a border with Brazil. The country also includes the Galápagos Islands in the Pacific, about 1,000 kilometres (620 mi) west of the mainland (Wiki).
