In the day of the recession—and post-recession—many bosses were more focused on keeping their companies afloat and many workers were happy to still be employed. Some pre-recession practices fell by the wayside in the process, from bonuses to even that company picnic where the Employee of the Month would be recognized and rewarded.

Though the economy is still on the rebound, experts say it’s a good investment to give your employees more than a pat on the back for a job well done. Productivity can hinge on morale, and oftentimes, workers want to feel that they’re appreciated in order to be efficient and go above and beyond.

1. Engagement
2. Retention
3. Productivity
4. Development
